Back Shu Acupressure : a gentle way to release back tensions and support your nervous system


Have you ever noticed what happens to your body when you are suddenly frightened or shocked?

Your heart starts racing. Your palms may become sweaty. Your shoulders tighten. Your breathing changes, and your pupils may dilate.

You do not consciously tell your body to do any of these things. They happen automatically.

This is your autonomic nervous system at work.

The autonomic nervous system helps regulate many of the functions that keep us alive and functioning without conscious effort, including heart rate, blood pressure, breathing, digestion, sweating, body temperature and bladder function. When we perceive danger or stress, sympathetic activity, the familiar “fight or flight” response increases, preparing the body to respond quickly.

Once the danger has passed, the body ideally shifts away from this heightened state and towards recovery.

But what happens when the body has difficulty switching off?

Some people describe feeling constantly “wired,” tense or unable to relax. Their shoulders remain elevated, the muscles beside the spine feel hard and tender, sleep becomes lighter, and they may become much more aware of their heartbeat or breathing.

This is one reason I pay attention not only to symptoms, but also to how much tension the body is holding, particularly through the neck, shoulders and back.

The Chinese Medicine Idea of Calming the Heart and Mind

In Chinese medicine, there is a therapeutic principle called Qing Xin An Shen (清心安神).

Literally, it means “to clear the Heart and calm the Shen.”

Within the traditional Chinese medicine framework, the Shen refers broadly to aspects of the mind, consciousness and emotional state. Treatments aimed at calming the Shen may include acupuncture, breathing practices, gentle movement such as Qigong, and attention to sleep and daily routines.

Another group of acupuncture points frequently used in traditional practice is the Back-Shu points (背俞穴).

What Are Back-Shu Points?

Back-Shu points are a classical group of acupuncture points located along the inner branch of the Bladder channel, running parallel to the spine.

Traditionally, individual Back-Shu points are associated with particular Zang-Fu organ systems. For example, Feishu (BL13) is traditionally associated with the Lung, Xinshu (BL15) with the Heart, Ganshu (BL18) with the Liver, Pishu (BL20) with the Spleen and Shenshu (BL23) with the Kidney.

The sympathetic nervous system arises largely from the thoracic and upper lumbar spinal cord, particularly T1–L2, and communicates with deeper sympathetic ganglia before reaching the internal organs. What is fascinating is that the Back-Shu points are situated in a region rich in skin, fascia, paraspinal muscles and sensory nerves communicating with the spinal cord. This provides a plausible modern framework for investigating how stimulation of the back might influence nervous-system responses.

Modern research is beginning to explore this relationship.

Can Stimulating the Back Affect the Autonomic Nervous System?

The science is more nuanced than simply saying, “press this point and it regulates this organ.”

One small human study examined acupuncture stimulation at Xinshu (BL15) and measured heart-rate variability, or HRV, which is commonly used as an indirect measure of cardiac autonomic modulation.

Among 56 healthy participants, manual acupuncture at BL15 produced changes in HRV parameters that the researchers interpreted as increased parasympathetic activity. Interestingly, different forms of stimulation at exactly the same point produced different autonomic responses, suggesting that how a point is stimulated may matter as much as where it is located.

An earlier experimental study involving ten healthy volunteers also reported changes in HRV, pulse rate and skin conductance following electroacupuncture at BL15.

These are interesting findings, but they are small physiological studies in healthy people. They do not prove that stimulating BL15 treats heart disease or that every Back-Shu point directly regulates its traditionally associated organ.

More recent neuroscience offers another interesting clue.

In a 2021 Nature study, researchers demonstrated in mice that electroacupuncture applied to different areas of the body could recruit different sensory-neural pathways and autonomic responses. In other words, the physiological response depended partly on where and how the body was stimulated.

This does not validate the entire classical meridian system, but it does provide an intriguing scientific basis for asking how stimulation of specific body regions might interact with autonomic regulation.

And sometimes we do not even need needles.

Research on massage has shown that manual stimulation of tense muscles can also influence autonomic measures. In one clinical experiment involving healthy adults, myofascial trigger-point massage to the neck and shoulders was followed by reduced heart rate and blood pressure, increased HRV measures associated with parasympathetic activity, and reduced subjective muscle tension.

So when your back feels tight and rigid after a stressful day, relaxing those muscles may be doing more than simply making them feel softer.

Try This Simple Back-Shu Self-Care Practice

You do not need to identify every Back-Shu point precisely to practise gentle self-care at home.

Instead, think of the Back-Shu region as the soft muscular area running along both sides of your spine.

Try this simple routine:

  • Place a soft massage ball or tennis ball between the wall and the muscles beside your spine. Do not place it directly over the bony centre of the spine.

  • Lean gently against the ball until you feel comfortable pressure—not sharp pain.

  • Stay on one area for around 20–30 seconds while relaxing your shoulders.

  • Breathe slowly through your nose. Try allowing your exhalation to become slightly longer than your inhalation rather than forcing a very deep breath.

  • Move the ball gradually to another tight area alongside the spine.

  • Spend about 3–5 minutes on each side. The aim is not to “dig into” the muscles but to give the area time to soften.

  • Stop if you experience sharp, electric or radiating pain, numbness, dizziness or any unusual symptoms.

Think gentle release, rather than aggressive pressure.

If you have osteoporosis, a recent spinal or rib injury, recent surgery, significant bruising or bleeding problems, or unexplained back pain, seek professional advice before using strong pressure. Acupuncture needling and therapeutic cupping should be performed by an appropriately trained practitioner rather than attempted as self-treatment.

Your Back Does Not Need to Be “Hard” to Hold You Up

When we are stressed, many of us unconsciously brace our bodies.

The shoulders rise.

The jaw tightens.

The breath becomes shallow.

The muscles beside the spine become rigid.

Sometimes one of the simplest things we can do is remind the body that it no longer needs to prepare for danger.

Stand tall.

Let your shoulders drop.

Gently open your chest.

Stretch the muscles alongside your spine.

And breathe.

Your back is one of the places where your muscles, sensory nerves and spinal nervous system are constantly communicating. Give that pathway a little room to breathe.

The traditional theory of Back-Shu points developed thousands of years before modern neuroanatomy. Ancient meridian maps and modern spinal anatomy are not identical; however, there are some fascinating parallels between the two.

I find it particularly interesting that both perspectives encourage us to pay attention to the relationship between the back, internal regulation, breathing, and emotional state.

Sometimes good self-care can begin with something very simple:

Unclench. Breathe. And let your back soften.
